Asymmetric Synthesis of Tertiary Benzylic Alcohols
[Image: see text] Vinyl, aryl and alkynyl organometallics add to ketones containing a stereogenic sulfoxide. Tertiary alcohols are generated in diastereomerically and enantiomerically pure form. Reductive lithiation converts the sulfoxide into a variety of useful functional groups.
