Intramolecular radical addition to the 2-pyridone nucleus

The radical species derived from the N-ω-haloalkylpyridones4b, 6c and the xanthates 7a, 7b undergo oxidative cyclizationto the bicyclic 2-pyridone derivatives 8a-c irrespective of whetherthey are generated under reductive (Bu3SnH/AIBN) or oxidative[Fe(II)/H2O2/DMSO or DLP] conditions.
