Methylene blue photosensitised strand cleavage of DNA: effects of dye binding and oxygen.
It is shown that methylene blue (MB+) photosensitises DNA in either aerated or deaerated solutions, causing direct cleavage of phosphodiester bonds and rendering additional bonds labile to alkali.
