The oldest ant in the Lower Cretaceous amber of Charente-Maritime (SW France) (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Gerontoformica cretacica n. gen., n. sp., until now the oldest known ant, is described after a putative workerspecimen, from the Uppermost Albian amber of France. Although its characters are those of modern ants, itdoes not fit in any recent ant subfamilies.
