A templated macrocyclization reaction was used to permanently encapsulate a highly fluorescent hydroxy-substituted squaraine dye inside a tetralactam macrocycle. The free squaraine dye is quite rigid due to internal hydrogen bonding and its photophysical properties hardly change upon encapsulation....
