Effects of Toluene and Phenethyl Alcohol on the Ultrastructure of Escherichia coli
Treatment of Escherichia coli cells with 0.25% toluene caused partial dissolution of the plasma membrane concomitant with displacement of nuclear material towards the cell periphery. By contrast, treatment with 0.25% phenethyl alcohol generated intracellular membranes.
