The essay examines some analogies which connect the famous dream of the mouse (“topo”) or topaz in "Quer pasticciaccio brutto de via Merulana" by Carlo Emilio Gadda (1957) to a page of Guy de Maupassant’s first novel, "Une vie" (1883).
