For too long, argues Jay Timothy Dolmage, disability has been constructed as the antithesis of higher education, often positioned as a distraction, a drain, a problem to be solved. The ethic of higher education encourages students and teachers alike to accentuate ability, valorize perfection, and stigmatize anything that hints at intellectual, mental, or physical weakness, even as we gesture toward the value of diversity and innovation. Examining everything from campus accommodation processes, to architecture, to popular films about college life, Dolmage argues that disability is central to higher education, and that building more inclusive schools allows better education for all. eng open access bic Book Industry Communication::J Society & social sciences::JN Education::JNC Educational psychology bic Book Industry Communication::J Society & social sciences::JN Education bic Book Industry Communication::V Health & personal development::VF Family & health::VFJ Coping with personal problems::VFJD Coping with disability thema EDItEUR::J Society and Social Sciences::JN Education::JNC Educational psychology thema EDItEUR::J Society and Social Sciences::JN Education thema EDItEUR::V Health, Relationships and Personal development::VF Family and health::VFJ Coping with / advice about personal, social and health topics::VFJD Coping with / advice about physical impairments / disability Higher education Disablity studies Academic Ableism Disability and Higher Education book 10.3998/mpub.9708722 b7359529-e5f7-4510-a59f-d7dafa1d4d17 9780472073719 9780472053711 244 The proposal was selected by the acquisitions editor who invited a full manuscript.
