Thoughts on Phryne’s name
Neither the name of the toad nor a colour adjective offer a satisfactory explanation for names in Φρυν-. A little-known folk figure called Φρύνη, mentioned sporadically in our texts, may be the source of the personal names and the name of the toad itself.
